Abstract

The prevalence of orthopaedic trauma and disease in the elderly patient has steadily increased due to the prolongation of the life span. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics by sex for orthopaedic surgery in elderly patients over sixty years old. The subject is 459 patients, operated on spine, hip, and knee at 1 hospital from Jan, 1993 to Dec. 1997 for 5 year. The factors that we analyzed were age, sex, height, weight, BMI, oeration, forced expiratory volume in 1 sex.; FEV1, albumin, hemoglobin, anesthetic method, operation time, blood loss, and operation period.

The results were as follows :

1) There was significant difference in age by sex

2) There was significant difference in physic conditions, such as height(p=0.000), weight(p=0.000), and BMI(p=0.000) by sex.

3) There was significant difference in operation types by sex.

4) There was significant difference in physiologic conditions, such as FEV1.0(p=0.000), albumin(p=0.027), and hemoglobin(p=0.000) by sex.

5) There was significant different in factors related with operation, such as operation ime(p=0.004), and blood loss(p=0.000) by sex.

6) There was no significant difference in underlying disease and anesthesia method by sex.

7) There was no significant difference in hospital stays by sex.
